Compared to other survival games like Raft or Rust, there is a deeply psychological element to the gameplay in Project Castaway. Aside from trying harsh conditions, players must also keep their wits about them and avoid losing their sanity while playing the game.
Alone and afraid
In Project Castaway, you find yourself getting washed ashore and stranded on a remote island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. With no other living soul in sight, you must fend for yourself as you navigate this mysterious place. Witness the beauty of nature with clear waters and golden sand, while preparing yourself to face unknown dangers that lie ahead as you delve deeper.
You first need to build a shelter from the natural resources available to protect you from the elements and serve as a base. Scavenge for food from trees or hunt wildlife to cook back home. Build tools and weapons to defend yourself from attacks and to chop, cut, or hammer materials. Be wary of the dynamic weather and deal with the elements, from the scorching heat to the deadly storms.
You can also construct a raft to visit neighboring islands in search of more resources or possibly other humans living there. The loneliness will eventually affect your mind, so be wary of violent hallucinations and other visions that may appear. Now, as of this writing, Project Runaway is still not available yet, but there are only a few days left before it does but as an Early Access release.
Keep your sanity and survive
It's no coincidence that Project Castaway has striking similarities to a classic film close in name, and it's pretty much the closest thing you can get to experiencing it in video game form. It is beautiful and unforgiving at the same time, and the various psychological facets of the gameplay only add to its realism and immersion. Check it out when it comes out.
